Spam – the facts and figures

Monday, February 4, 2008

Spam is the result of the activities of a small number of people; however these activities are becoming a big problem for Internet users. Spammers are flooding the Internet with messages and making it increasing difficult to get on with our daily tasks and work, which involves the Internet.

Spammers are not only attacking our inbox they have also started to turn on anti-spam sites. They have started to send out spam emails using the anti-spammers names, email addresses and website addresses within their spam messages. This is known as a ‘Joe-job.’ The reason as to why spammers do this is to cause trouble for the people who are fighting them and trying to stop them sending out spam messages.

There are two main forms of spam present on the Internet. The one is what we all already know about, email spam, which targets individual users with direct mail messages and steals Internet mailing lists as well as searching the web for email addresses that spammers can add to their spam lists.

The second popular form of spam on the Internet is not so well known. This comes in the form of Usenet spam. This is a single message that is sent to around 20 users of Usenet newsgroups. However through experience Usenet users have grown to ignore such messages as they have found that a message posted to so many newsgroups is often not relevant. These messages are aimed at ‘lurker’s,’ people who read newsgroups but never post in them or rarely post in them. By doing this spammers are robbing the user’s utility of the newsgroup as it will be overwhelmed with adverts and irrelevant posts.

The submission of the name "Spam" to unwanted posts and communication originates in Chat-rooms. It was first seen in the chat-rooms of People-Link in the early 1980’s as a way of getting rid of unwanted “newcomers.” When someone would enter a chat-room full of friends who were in mid-conversation, and tried to turn the conversation in an unwelcome direction, two veteran members of the room would begin typing in the Monty Python “Spam” routine at high speed. They would fill the screen with “Spam Spam Spam eggs Spam Spam and Spam” etc, and make all other communication impossible. The other members of the room would just wait until the newcomer moved on to a different room.

Email, newsgroup and chat room spam is a globally growing problem with the countries that spread the most spam globally being the USA (28.4%), South Korea (5.2%), China (4.9%) and Russia (4.4%).

There has previously been pressure to make email spam illegal and it has been successful in certain jurisdictions but not in all meaning that spammers merely take advantage of this fact and post more spam to places where they won’t get in trouble for doing so.

Anti spammers want to see this pressure to make spam illegal more often as spam can not only waste many production hours and be really aggravating; it can also lead to criminal activity in the sense that spammers have to potential to spread computer viruses such as Trojan horses and other malicious software. There objective for doing this may well be identity theft meaning that action needs to taken against spammers and it needs to be taken now.

To Download or Not To Download

The dilemma facing many new Iphone owners is whether they should download games to play on it or should they just use the built in web browser to play online browser games. The biggest argument is the fact that there are far more games available to download than there is to play online. Read on for more information.

In most cases, if all you are looking to do is pass the time it can be worthwhile to just use the online games. Even if you aren't aware of them, it's very simple to find playable browser games – a quick internet search will usually reveal hundreds if not thousands of them.

This is obviously good news, but the downside is that the online games are usually inferior in quality to the games you would download. Also, you will need to be in an internet service area to be able to play them. This can cause problems if you are travelling on a bus or train or something, as the signals can easily be dropped in these circumstances, which means the game goes byebye!

On the bright side, downloading Iphone games does not need to be as expensive as you may first imagine. Granted, it can be expensive, but if you can find some of the better sites around, you'll find there's a wealth of games and things available for you to download for free.

This sounds great, but it can be a little dangerous if you aren't well prepared, so check out these guidelines first:

1-First of all, steer clear of the Peer 2 Peer or file sharing sites. Downloading from sites like this is illegal in many countries and territories, so if you do feel the need to visit them be sure to check your local laws and regulations. It's never been easier for the authorities to trace downloads etc, so don't break the law unless you want to go to jail.

2-Keep your computer safe- actively downloading files and games etc can be a great way to get it stuffed full of viruses and dangerous software, so it's important to make sure your security suite is up to date and working correctly. You won't be downloading anything if you ruin your computer!

3-The last tip is to be prepared to pay for access. Some of the better sites will charge you an admin fee before they give you access to their download database. This sounds bad, but it will give you access to their MP3s and movies as well as games, so it usually represents excellent value, as their libraries are large and your downloads are usually uncapped.

As you can see, downloading anything to your Iphone can be dangerous and can easily ruin your computer if you aren't careful. Hopefully these guidelines will help you stay safe.

Three Great Tips For Handling PDF Conversions

Thursday, January 31, 2008

1. Zamzar launches a pretty nifty file conversion service

I wanted to scrape a graphic from a PDF file and I was searching online for my options. Normally one looks for a packaged option, downloadable, and I was sorting through the free and not so free, the working and not so working and I came across this little gem called Zamzar. It’s a service, rather than software, and they do one or two of the niftiest things going. First, they translate my PDF files into just about any file format I could wish for. This was what I wanted in the first place, but they also offered to do little other things that were neat, like send me a file that they can scrape off Youtube! I like that. Let me go aside for a paragraph and then back to Zamzar.

I pulled Paul Tobey’s Music Box Dancer, which is a jazzed up version of the classic off and now I can listen to it on my PDA when I don’t have internet access. One of the comments said it best for me: “I like both versions. These guys are just having a great jam session having fun with a tune that lends itself to such things.” Over 22,000 views can’t be wrong! Paul is an interesting guy. I met him at one of his Internet Marketing Courses, and after about three hours, realized that he wasn’t just teaching me how to do Search Engine Optimization, but he was also teaching me about copy writing, etiquette, strategy, how to close sales, and just plain Internet business sense. His Music Box dancer is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmqgNKB1uog and you can look over his internet marketing course at http://www.trainingbusinesspros.com/. But that’s not why I’m writing this. Through Paul, I found a great practical use for Zamzar and this is how it fits usefully into my life.

Zamzar is a pretty neat converter. It's free. You go to www.zamzar.com and simply upload your file. Shortly afterwards, Zamzar emails you a link back. You follow that link and download the converted file. It's free, and pretty easy!

Zamzar does the following conversions to PFD and back. The entire list, which includes images, audio and video!

• convert PDF to doc - Microsoft Word Document
• convert PDF to html - Hypertext Markup Language
• convert PDF to odt - OpenDocument Text Document
• convert PDF to pcx - Paintbrush Bitmap Image
• convert PDF to png - Portable Network Graphic
• convert PDF to ps - Postscript document
• convert PDF to rtf - Rich Text Format
• convert PDF to txt - Text document
and

• convert csv to PDF Comma Separated Values
• convert doc to PDF Microsoft Word Document
• convert docx to PDF Microsoft Word 2007 Document
• convert odp to PDF OpenDocument presentation
• convert ods to PDF OpenDocument spreadsheet
• convert odt to PDF OpenDocument Text Document
• convert ppt to PDF Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation
• convert pptx to PDF Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 Presentation
• convert ps to PDF Postscript document
• convert rtf to PDF Rich Text Format
• convert wpd to PDF WordPerfect Document
• convert wps to PDF Microsoft Works Document
• convert xls to PDF Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet
• convert xlsx to PDF Microsoft Excel 2007 Spreadsheet

The thing that I really like about Zamzar is that they are new and coming up with new stuff all the time. It also seems to convert WordPerfect documents into Word documents and Word documents into WordPerfect Documents which can be very handy if you are in a WordPerfect shop.

I'll use Zamzar occasionally. However, I'm not sure I want to ship my corporate or personal information to Zamzar or off into some unknown place in the Interweb, but I sure like it for what it does. I'll stick to MyPDFCreator for the business critical and personal stuff, but Zamzar is a great tool in the toolbox!

2. PDF Etiquette: It's the right thing!

Just because you have PDF doesn't mean you have to use it! When should one use PDF and when should one stick to POT (Plain old Text)

PDF is great when you want to send an uneditable document. Examples include quotations, invoices, legal documents, and ebooks PDF is also outstanding for sending documents for which the presentation layout is crucial, like annual reports.

However, anytime that you email an attachment, it requires extra clicks to open it, and people tend not to do extra clicks. They miss the attachment, or they don't want to open attachments for fear of viruses, or, if they are on an old computer, opening up large PDF or other files can slow down and stop a computer. If you are sending a birthday party initiation or something casual, put it in the email. Don't use any attachment at all.

3. In Software, "Feature Rich" can be a "Bloated Pig"!

Make sure that the software you are using isn't loaded down with options you'll never use. If you buy, for example, Adobe Professional for $449.00 you are getting the most complete feature rich, product available. This is great when you want to "Design forms to collect and aggregate data through e-mail or on the web" for example. But if 100% you are going to do falls in the realm of "create a Word Document or a PowerPoint show and convert it to PDF and back" then you don't need to spend most of the $449.00 and you don't need to have to struggle through the myriad of options that the "Feature Rich" software offers you, and you don't need to go on a three day training course. Buy the bacon, not the whole hog!

Must Know Shopping Tips For Internet Faxing

There are more than a few reasons why virtual faxing is recommended for most users. In fact Internet fax is growing into a multimillion industry where virtual faxing services are now offered worldwide. Conventional fax machines are old, expensive, and some what inefficient in modern days like now. Imaging you have a service that requires zero to low start up cost, great working mobility, easier fax management, and more over, a service with better reliability – would you be switching to this service from the stale facsimile machine? You bet!

The service I am talking about is Internet faxing service

Internet faxing in brief is a web application that allows you to send and receive faxes via Internet. Also known as virtual faxing, Internet fax uses IP networks to transmit fax data instead of the conventional PSTN. E-mails are normally used as the medium in commercial Internet faxing services.

Explaining the Email faxing service in detail might be a very tough job. However, there is nothing much consumers need to learned in order to implement the Internet faxing technology into their business. In brief, Internet faxing is a service that enables you to send and receive faxes without using the fax machine.Instead, faxes will be transmitted in digital form via the Internet. Sent (or received) in Email attachment, Email faxes can be read and organized in both soft- and hardcopy.

What can Internet fax service do for you?

While faxing is an indispensable communication way, Internet faxing turned out to be a better choice against conventional fax machine. Instead of causing problem like paper jam, extra phone line cost, cuts off page text, and fax transmission failure; Internet faxing offer faxing solution with cheaper operation cost, easier 24/7 faxing, greater mobility, and of course, no more paper jamming.

Internet faxing requires very low start up and operation cost. You can actually estimate to save 50 – 70 % startup cost when compare with conventional faxing machine. To use Email faxing services, all you need is a computer with Internet connection and an active Internet fax service account. As the PC is a must for any kind of business nowadays, theoretically the account subscription fees is the only extra pay for using Internet fax. When comparing with conventional faxing equipment such subscription fees are extremely low as they normally ranged from $10 to $20 (depends on your level of usage).

Mobility is another selling point for Internet faxing services. All you need for sending Email fax is just a PC with Internet connection and an Internet faxing account – this enables you to send faxes in anywhere, anytime.

Answering the 'who' question

So who are the reputable merchants in Internet faxing services? If you are shopping for one, these names should not be stranger to you: eFax, Fax Away, MyFax, Virtual Fax, and CallWave Virtual Fax (new service).

Now shopping for Internet faxing might be confusing with so many merchant, there are, nevertheless, lots of great deals available online. The smart thing to do is, of course, check a few reputable ones and pick the one that suits your faxing needs best.

Why You May Need To Do A Reverse Yahoo Email Search

Friday, January 25, 2008

There are millions of people all over the world with Yahoo e-mail accounts. Because these are free to get and easy to set up, everyone gets one. This can lead to a situation where you need to do a reverse Yahoo email search to uncover who is sending you unwanted e-mails.

Let's talk a little bit about how you can do that.

If you are receiving an e-mail from a Yahoo e-mail account it is important to know that you can do a reverse e-mail search to find out where they came. If you're receiving unwanted e-mails doing a reverse e-mail trace allows you to learn more about the person sending these to you.

Harvesting e-mail addresses is big business and people's e-mail addresses can end up in all kinds of databases that they never intended them to be. With a reverse Yahoo e-mail address search it will search the Internet, consumer, and e-mail databases to look for information. It will also search public records to see if there is information about a person's name, address, and for the e-mail address that they're using.

The information that you'll receive will contain everything that is associated with that yahoo e-mail address when the reverse email trace is done. If there is information that can be found a reverse e-mail search may be able to find it

Anyone that gets on the Internet leaves information behind on where they've been. This is why doing reverse e-mail searches are possible. Another way to view this is whenever you enter information online that includes your website address it points back to the IP address showing where your location is.

Sometimes is very easy to do. At other times during reverse e-mail searches can be hard. In this case, you may need to actually hire a professional depending how bad you want to find out the identity of the person sending emails to you.

Everyone has their own reason why they want to trace an email back to the sender. Here are several of them. Do you see your reason on this list?

1. You are receiving junk email

2. Viruses could be infecting your computer

3. You are fed up with all the spam you get in your in box.

4. Depending on the severity of the emails you are getting there may come a time when you need to know the identity of the person sending them so you can turn it over to local authorities and have them get involved.

5. You send sensitive documents by e-mail and don't want anyone else to see those.

This is just a few reasons why you may want to a reverse Yahoo email search. Again if you can not find the identity of the person sending these to you consider hiring a professional to do it.
